Use dance-safe cleaners like ProClean for daily maintenance, Slip NoMor® for improving traction, and SimplyGone® for disinfecting and odor removal. Avoid household products that can damage flooring.

A marley floor is a specialized vinyl dance surface known for its controlled slip, durability, and versatility. It supports ballet, jazz, contemporary, and even ballroom work due to its consistent, professional feel. It’s designed to roll out smoothly and lay flat when properly acclimated.

Studios choose marley flooring because it provides safer traction, reduces injury risk, and works over sprung or hard subfloors. Many dancers favor it for its predictable response, which improves performance and control across varied movement styles.

Stagestep’s marley dance floor products are made from high-quality vinyl with multiple layers engineered for flexibility, stability, and long-term use. Some Stagestep surfaces also include fiberglass reinforcement for dimensional stability.

These layers create a durable surface that resists scuffs, tap marks, and pressure damage when properly maintained. The smooth, non-porous texture also supports easy cleaning and long-term safety for dancers.

The marley flooring cost varies depending on thickness, style, and installation method. Prices change based on temporary, semi-permanent, or permanent setups, plus whether a sprung subfloor is required. Most of our floors are priced between $2.50–$14.50/sq ft.

For full pricing guidance, explore the Stagestep Dance Floor Cost Guide.

Installation depends on whether the system is temporary, semi-permanent, or glued down. The vinyl must be acclimated for 24 hours at 68–78°F, unrolled carefully, and allowed to lie flat before taping or adhering.

Studios can use top tape, double-faced tape, ReUseIt® underlayment, or full adhesive bonding depending on their needs. Detailed instructions can be found in the Official Floor Installation Guide.

To lay a marley floor, ensure the subfloor is smooth, clean, level, and dry. Stagestep floors requires moisture testing for concrete slabs and maintaining relative humidity between 40–60% for best results.

After prepping the space, rolls are positioned in the same direction, trimmed with a small expansion gap, and secured with the chosen installation method. Here are some tips on installing your Marley dance floor.

Proper maintenance includes daily dry mopping and weekly cleaning with a pH-neutral detergent such as ProClean®. This prevents residue buildup that can make the floor slippery or sticky.

Avoid harsh chemicals, rosin, and abrasive tools, which damage vinyl. Scuffs, tap marks, and dyes can be removed with approved Stagestep products. Full best-practices are found in Stagestep’s Maintenance Guide.

Do not flood-mop, use ammonia, vinegar, alcohol, or household cleaners. These products degrade the surface and affect traction. Avoid sunlight exposure when possible, as UV can shorten the floor’s lifespan.

Also avoid rosin, sticky substances, and high-RPM buffing machines, which can damage finish or alter friction. Find out more about what not to do to your Marley floors.

Different marley floors suit different dance styles, some provide faster surfaces suited for tap or ballroom, while others offer slower traction ideal for ballet. Consider discipline, installation type, and subfloor conditions when selecting.
