There are many factors to consider when determining the right size for your dance studio. First, how many dancers will be in a class? Second, how much traveling combinations are involved and at what distance? Third, what type of dance is being taught?

Generally speaking, tap required relatively little space compared to ballet. Classes can be broken down into sequential groups accommodating more students in a smaller space. Portable ballet barres can allow for additional students in a smaller studio.

The relative sizes of studios are 20 x 20 small, 20 x 30 medium, 30x 40 large and anything over is extra-large. A very rough rule of thumb is to allow for 25 square foot per student. A small studio should accommodate up to 16 students, while a medium studio should handle up to 24 students and a large studio up to 48.

Making the space work for the number of students you have in a class is an art unto itself. Many studio owners have learned how to make do. However, bigger is usually better.

If you are in the market for a space, keep in mind the number of expected students who will be using it at the same time. Most studio owners tend to expand rather than downsizing.

It may be advantageous to find a space in which you can grow your class size. Many studios perform the Nutcracker and/or stage recitals. What a luxury to have a studio the size of your performing space so you only have to space the work once.

The smaller the number of students you have, the more space per student will be needed. A rule of thumb is not a tape measure and there is no formula that works all the time. A tap class can fit almost twice and many as a ballet class.

Just be aware of space vs students. Keep it in mind when determining the size of the studio you are leasing or buying.  Needless to say, the dance floor system is your number one priority in putting together your studio, along with a proper heating and air conditioning system to keep everyone safe and sound.
